Profile | Amar Tandukar

Born and brought up at Old Baneshwor, in his ancestral home, Amar Tandukar grew up in the right environment to become a singer that he is now. He polished his singing skills at Royal Nepal Academy where his teachers were none other than Shambhujit Baskota and Ambar Gurung.

Years back, he joined the band- Sparsha. The title song of the band's first album, Naulo Yatra won the hearts of many, and went on to be one of the favorites among the young listeners for many years to come. He later came up with his solo album - Amar, a couple of songs from which put him in the limelight. Dhearai Din Bhayo Timro Jhajhaiko Yo Manma Auna Chhodi Gayo and Yestai Rahechha Yahanko Chalan are the two songs still very popular among his fans. A glorious moment in his musical career came when he received the Album of the Year award from Hits FM for his album- Melamchi Panile. "An award is a great moral booster for an artist. It not only makes us feel respected but compels us to produce quality work in future," he says.

Besides those that are included in his albums, Amar Tandukar also has many other singles to his credit, which have been included in many collection albums. He also lent his voice for the song Sittaima Sittaima from the movie Chunauti. He has performed in live programs within the country and abroad. He also composes his songs (all the songs in Melamchi Panile was composed by him).

Amar also hold a job it the Music Department at Royal Nepal Academy. Educated at Baneshwor Campus, he loves football. "I used to play the game passionately and was quite good at it," he recalls.

Like many others, Amar too is concerned about the poor quality songs that are being churned out by the mushrooming bands everyday. He thinks that this can be checked if a censoring body is formed whose function would be to restrict the release of such songs or upgrade them before the release.

And that applies for him too. The listeners can once again judge his songs when he releases his next album, Kahile Kahin, on the eve of Tihar. He has high hopes for this album, which he says, is "a mixture of folk and pop songs". "There are eight songs in the album and they are all very enjoyable," he adds.
